In 2026, the Rigby farm shall continue over two decades of the practices of no fall tillage, intact fall mulch, no fallow, no ionic nitrogen, no fungicides, and no non-selective herbicides to ensure thriving vegetation and soil everywhere. These disciplines succeeded in reversing the white salt salination that had appeared in low patches in the 1990's, first time since the ice age. That salinity had followed 3 decades of intensive chemical farming, after 8 decades of traditional grain farming since our family homesteaded in 1882. Now, except in the tracks on the lane, our farm is unique in the area, with again no bare saline patches anywhere.
Some fields will remain certified organic. While remaining true to the primary goals of organic farming, other fields will now receive only selective herbicides that leave no residue, and only non-nitrogen fertilizers, to maintain safe clean food and vibrant ecology, and avoid both salination and the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide. By prohibiting all pesticides that are toxic to mycorrhizae, and now also ceasing deep tillage, the net sequestration of the GHG carbon dioxide into enduring glomalin proteins in soil will be hastened, to best help avert excess climate warming.
